PennDOT: I-81 repair postponed to Tuesday evening - Cumberlink - Carlisle Sentinel

PennDOT said repair on micro-surfacing, which was scheduled to start Monday night, was canceled due to rainy weather.

The project was for Interstate 81 in the Carlisle area and western Cumberland County.

PennDOT said the contractor has an aggressive schedule and work will proceed Tuesday night if it's not raining. The contract expects to wrap up the project in about two months, PennDOT said.

The construction project began last August and was suspended in the fall with the onset of cold weather. The overall project limits extend from Exit 37 (Newville) in Penn Township to Exit 48 (York Street) in South Middleton Township.

Motorists may encounter single-lane traffic restrictions in the vicinity of the construction work on weeknights and also weekends between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day.

PennDOT said this portion of Interstate 81 averages between 40,800 to 68,650 vehicles a day, with heavy trucks accounting for about 25 percent of the traffic.

Drivers should slow down when approaching and traveling through the work zone.

PennDOT contracted with New York Bituminous Products Corp. of Chester, N.Y., to conduct work at a cost of $2.3 million.

The Party of Morning Joe - The Atlantic

I don't generally endorse theories of pathological Democratic weakness, but there really is no other way to see Senate Democrats voting to exclude FAA furloughs from the sequestration. As my label-mate Derek Thompson points out, when you have a Congress that "reacts to flight delays but not to low-income families losing housing vouchers" you have a basic problem of democracy.

Everyone agrees that sequestration is horrible policy. That was the point. Democrats now agree that poor and working people should bear the full brunt of that policy, while Delta Gold members should bear less of it. This is cruelty, or at least the willingness to abide cruelty. From Ezra Klein:

Recall the Democrats' original theory of the case: Sequestration was supposed to be so threatening that Republicans would agree to a budget deal that included tax increases rather than permit it to happen. That theory was wrong. The follow-up theory was that the actual pain caused by sequestration would be so great that it would, in a matter of months, push the two sides to agree to a deal. Democrats just proved that theory wrong, too.

In effect, what Democrats said Friday was that in any case where the political pain caused by sequestration becomes unbearable, they will agree to cancel that particular piece of the bill while leaving the rest of the law untouched. The result is that sequestration is no longer particularly politically threatening, but it's even more unbalanced: Cuts to programs used by the politically powerful will be addressed, but cuts to programs that affects the politically powerless will persist. It's worth saying this clearly: The pain of sequestration will be concentrated on those who lack political power.

Sequestration was premised on the abiding belief among Democratic power-brokers--including the president--that Republicans and Democrats were working with equal pain thresholds. They are not. Obama underestimated his enemies, and now we are going to pay for it.

If I were a Republican moderate (assuming there even are any left) what argument would I have for pulling my my more wayward allies to the table? On sequestration, at least, we all know The Party of Morning Joe is going to eventually fold anyway.

As a CQ / Roll Call reporter tweeted last night, "Make no mistake, this FAA fix is a complete, utter cave by Senate Democrats and, if signed, by the White House." This is a sentiment expressed in other press reports over the last 12 hours, including, Politico: "Democrats blink first on aviation" and Chicago Tribune: "White House Scrambles For Damage Control."

Consider that the Democrats opening position was they would only replace the sequester with tax increases. By the first of this week Senator Reid proposed replacing the whole sequester with phony war savings. And by last night, Senate Democrats were adopting our targeted "cut this, not that" approach.

Report: Tyrann Mathieu canceled visits with Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans - Yahoo! Canada Sports (blog)

Apparently, Honey Badger just don't care. (Getty Images)LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu doesn't have any margin for error when it comes to his draft stock. The substance abuse issues that caused him to get booted off the Tigers' roster before the 2012 season, and caused him to fail more drug tests than he could remember, have a lot of people wondering if the former Heisman Trophy finalist is draftable at all, despite his estimable talent.

And as he goes through the last vestiges of the pre-draft process, it appears that Mathieu is still kicking up some dirt. According to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, Mathieu had recent visits scheduled with the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks, but cancelled them due to illness.

"Honey Badger got sick last wk & had to blow off 2 team visits," Glazer wrote on his Twitter account. "Any other player, no prob. Him? Everything he does is put under a microscope. Still think he gets picked Day 2."

Per Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune, the Seahawks have confirmed that the visit was cancelled.

Mathieu certainly seemed to be feeling better at a gathering held in New York during the first round of the NFL draft, and USA Today's Robert Klemko was along for the ride. Mathieu reportedly believed that he could be selected with the 18th overall pick once the San Francisco 49ers traded up with the Dallas Cowboys, but it was Eric Reid, Mathieu's LSU teammate, who went to the Bay Area instead. And at the end of the first round, the Baltimore Ravens selected Florida safety Matt Elam, believed to be the best pure slot defender in the draft that people are taking seriously because he isn't full of red flags,

But as Glazer intimated, Mathieu have enough on-field potential to have NFL teams interested in him as a second-day prospect -- most likely in the third round, if this latest bit of news doesn't drop his stock even further.

At the scouting combine, Mathieu sounded legitimately repentant ... but there's what you say when you're supposed to, and there's the day-to-day reality.

"First of all, I want them to be able to trust me," he said in February, when asked what he wanted NFL teams to know about him. "I hold myself accountable for everything I've done, and in this past year, it's been tough. At the end of the day, I want them to know that I'm a football player. I want to be a great teammate and I want to be the same leader on the field that I know I can be off the field.

"I'm not totally asking them to trust me right now. What I have asked is for them to give me an opportunity to play the game. I've had a lot of time to reflect on it, especially without football. It's really given me a different outlook on life, and it's just about being the right kind of person."

Well, there's what one says, and what one does. Mathieu will soon see just how much the NFL has bought into his pre-draft redemption.

Bears quotes: Kyle Long - Chicago Tribune

Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery on drafting offensive lineman Kyle Long of Oregon in the first round.

Transcript of Kyle Long's media session Thursday.

Opening statement:

'I'm very excited and grateful to be a Chicago Bear. I didn't expect to go this high in the draft. I'm just very excited to join an organization with such a great history and such a great fan base. Not enough can be said about the Chicago Bears organization.'

On if it is a good or bad thing having famous father (Hall of Famer Howie Long) and brother (Rams defensive end Chris Long):

'Well, like with anything, you take the good with the bad. Obviously the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. With the wealth of knowledge they have in the game of football, they've been able to help me a lot through this process and I'm obviously grateful for having them and their knowledge.'

On his predraft visit with the Bears:

'I wasn't surprised I ended up being picked by the Bears. I had a great visit with Coach Kromer and I really enjoyed my time in Chicago. I had a great opportunity to sit down and get to know the people within the building. I got to O'Hare, I was getting ready to fly back home and I had a great feeling about Chicago. Obviously, Coach Kromer is a great coach and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to try to earn the respect of my teammates and hopefully be able to help the Chicago Bears.'On why he didn't expect to be drafted this high

'You never really expect to go -- I was just trying to keep an open mind. In high school I sat through 23 rounds of the Major League Baseball draft waiting to hear my name called every pick, so I just tried to keep my expectations pretty low and keep an open mind about what happens, but I was so thrilled and I was ecstatic to hear the Chicago Bears drafted me.'

On how not playing a lot of D-I football games has affected him:

'I think it is a good thing and a bad thing. My inexperience can be looked at in two ways. It can be looked at in the light of I feel like I can get a lot better with coaching and with the right guys around me and I feel like I have that opportunity in Chicago. I'm really excited to get to work with Coach Kromer and the rest of the staff.'

On addressing the questions about his off-the-field troubles in the past:

'I was a young kid and I was just dealing with some stuff off the field that I had to work through. I'm past it now. I am four-and-a-half years removed from the spoken issues, so I feel like my best ball and all of that is ahead of me. I'm real excited just to be a part of the Bears organization. I'm grateful for them. The fact that they've given me an opportunity.'

On if there was ever a feeling that other teams stayed away from him because of his past and how the Bears handled it with him:

'The Bears were just very straight-forward. They liked what they saw in me as a football player and nothing from what they had heard led them to believe anything different in regards to off the field. I feel like I'm a pretty stand-up guy. I'm an honest guy. I'm very forthright. I'm very blunt and we had a great meeting and I was able to answer some of the questions that they had. It was a good meeting overall.'

On what his best position is along the offensive line and if he feels he can win a starting job as a rookie:

'I'm just an offensive lineman. There's a lot of emphasis put on tackle or guard or center but you can only travel a certain number of guys and I just hope to come in and earn a spot somewhere.'

On who first addressed him with the Bears organization after he was selected:

'Robyn (Wilkey) and then I got on the phone with Coach Trestman. Robyn who was obviously doing the point work for the Bears today. I got a phone call and I heard her voice and she said, 'We're going to put you on hold and Coach Trestman is going to get on the phone with you and that's when I got all hot and sweaty and excited and fired up. I got to speak with Coach Trestman and it has been an exciting night for my family and myself. I'm just really happy.'

On what Coach Trestman said to him and how he feels he can help the Bears offensive line:

'Coach Trestman ' it's been clear from the beginning in conversations with him that I am a very raw player. They are on the same page with me in that my best ball is ahead of me. They're confident in their staff ' as I am ' that they can get me ready to play. I just want to come in and work day-in and day-out to try to earn the respect of the guys around me and the people in the building over there in Chicago. Hopefully good things happen.'

On adjusting from Oregon's offensive system to the Bears:

'It's 11 guys playing against 11 guys. It's football still. You still put your hand on the ground. You still line up in your stance. There is a cadence and there is a football out there. There's a quarterback, there's a running back and I feel like not much changes in that regard. Obviously the tempo that we played in at Oregon turned some heads and got a lot of attention nationally from football fans, but when it comes down to it, it's still football.'

On hearing that he is the best athlete in his family:

'I don't know about that. I'm standing next to a guy who is doing dishes right now who is a pretty dang good athlete in my dad (Pro Football Hall of Famer Howie Long) and my older brother (Chris) was there tonight. I've got some good athletes walking around my house. I think they're kind of blowing smoke.'

On if he can still play baseball for the Chicago White Sox, who previously drafted him:

'Well, I'm here to play football now. I'm a football player but who knows, down the road, maybe.'

DIY Spirit Lamp - Science 2.0 - Science 2.0

Second-hand stores like Goodwill, Salvation Army, and local mom & pop shops are treasure troves of things to hack or repurpose. When you hack something you're probably using it in a way in which it was never intended to be used so, there is always a risk that things might not go the way you planned. But since you can get items from second-hand stores on the cheap, you don't care too much if you are disappointed with the results. Luckily, this "MacGyverism" was successful. I'll demonstrate how I converted an olive oil bottle into an alcohol lamp.

This build includes, glass, a flammable liquid (rubbing alcohol), boiling water, and fire so, given this lawsuit-happy country in which we live, I'll borrow a quotation that appears at the beginning of every Mythbusters episode:

Adam Savage: Don't try this at home.

Jaime Hyneman: EVER!

Adam Savage: We're what you call "experts.'

I found this 'Olive You!' olive oil bottle at Goodwill:

Source

It reminded me of a Erlenmeyer flask. It's short and squat and stable with a wider base than top. The build is very simple. I added a small tiki torch (tabletop tiki torch) wick to the olive oil bottle and created an alcohol burner, or spirit lamp. Just add rubbing alcohol for fuel.

Five arrested in massage-parlor stings across Tamarac - Sun-Sentinel

Five unlicensed masseuses have been arrested ' three of them on prostitution-related charges ' following undercover sweeps at massage parlors across Tamarac, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Jinghua Sun, 50; Xiaoying Wu, 48 and Songying Piao, 39, each was taken into custody Wednesday on an offer of prostitution charge, according to sheriff's reports. Sun and Wu were additionally charged with practicing a massage without a license. All three allegedly offered sex acts during massages, officials said.

An anonymous complaint prompted the Sheriff's Office to conduct an undercover operation that yielded arrests at four businesses, Sheriff's spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said.

On Wednesday, Wu was working at Dao Massage in the 5800 block of North University Drive, where she massaged a detective for $50 and touched the detective's penis, the Sheriff's Office said. Similarly, Piao is accused of touching an undercover detective's genitals after a $60 massage at Far East Oriental Massage in the 4600 block of West Commercial Boulevard, the agency said.

The same day, authorities targeted Sun's workplace, Sunshine Massage in the 7300 block of West McNab Road. Sun allegedly gave an undercover detective a $40 massage and, toward the end, touched his privates and told him that if he returned she would perform oral sex for $50, the agency said.

Two other women were charged with practicing a massage without a license ' but not accused of prostitution, officials said. They were Qing Liang, 49, a worker at Sunshine Massage, and Miriam Benedon, 43, who worked at Basically Natural, a business in a suite near Sunshine Massage's suite.

Sun, Liang and Wu resided at their workplaces, but there were no signs of human trafficking, Coleman-Wright said.

With the aid of a Mandarin translator, Piao on Thursday told Broward Judge John "Jay" Hurley that she had moved from New York two weeks ago. Hurley told Piao, "You can probably find something else to do for work."

Workers will bring in pumps to remove water from the tunnel and adjust the overhead roller gates before testing, according to Ted Carr, project manager.

"The gates will be tested on Saturday in conjunction with the remaining tunnel work," he said in a press release.

The Corps of Engineers, state Department of Transportation and Development and Plaquemines Parish government are conducting the work.

Allan Arbus dies at 95; played psychiatrist on 'MASH' - Los Angeles Times

Allan Arbus, in 2000, at the Laguna Playhouse, where he was playing the lead' (Don Bartletti / Los Angeles')

As the wise, dryly humorous psychiatrist caring for shellshocked surgeons and troops in the hit television series "MASH," actor Allan Arbus was so convincing that at least one colleague assumed he had expertise in the medical specialty.

In 1973, the first season of the long-running CBS show about a mobile Army hospital during the Korean War, series star Alan Alda would often sit with Arbus between takes, questioning him about psychiatric theories.

Alda, who played Capt. "Hawkeye" Pierce, said in an interview Tuesday, "He was so authentic in the role it was hard to believe that he wasn't that person."

Arbus, a film, stage and television actor best known for his recurring role as psychiatrist Dr. Sidney Freedman on "MASH," died Friday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 95.

The cause was complications of congestive heart failure, said his daughter Arin Arbus.

Arbus did not begin acting professionally until he was in his 40s, after a successful career in fashion photography with his first wife, Diane Arbus. The couple, who divorced in 1969 but remained close, ended their professional partnership in 1956, after which she began the unflinching black and white portraiture for which she became known. She committed suicide in 1971.

Tending to the psychic wounds of the fictional 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, Arbus infused his role with empathy and his own life experience, Alda said. "He brought a depth ' to what he faced as a psychiatrist on the show," the actor said. "It helped the audience and ' actors believe some of the stresses our characters were under."

The younger of two children, Allan Franklin Arbus was born Feb. 15, 1918, in New York City. His father, Harry Arbus, traded in mutual funds. His mother, the former Rose Goldberg, was an English teacher.

Arbus finished high school at 15 and enrolled at City College of New York. He soon left, going to work at Russek's, a women's specialty store in New York City. There, when he was 18 and she was 13, he met Diane Nemerov, daughter of the store's co-owner. The couple married in 1941 and pursued their interest in photography, with Allan giving Diane her first camera.

With the outbreak of World War II, Arbus joined the Army Signal Corps in 1941, serving as a photographer in Burma. After he returned, he and Diane, encouraged by her father, opened their own studio, doing advertising and other photography for Russek's and eventually for Glamour and Vogue magazines.

After his wife left the business for her own work, Arbus kept the photo studio but also began taking acting lessons with New York teacher Mira Rostova, who had taught actor Montgomery Clift, among others.

Through his acting classes, Arbus met actress Mariclare Costello and they married in 1976. She survives him, along with their daughter, Arin, and his daughters Doon and Amy, from his first marriage.

In 1969, Arbus moved to California to further his acting career. He made films, including two directed by Robert Downey Sr. that achieved cult status, "Putney Swope" in 1969 and "Greaser's Palace" in 1972, in which he played a zoot-suited Jesus. In the 1970s and 1980s, he appeared regularly on several TV series.

But most memorably, he was Dr. Sidney Freedman, imparting dry wisdom to the 4077th's beleaguered staff, as he did in his final appearance in 1983:

"Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice; pull down your pants and slide on the ice."

Steampunk AT-ST Desktop Lamp: For Fighting off Desk Ewoks - Technabob - Technabob (blog)

April 24th, 2013 by: Conner Flynn

Desk Ewoks can be a serious problem. They are attracted by crumbs and spills from hundreds of late night gaming sessions with never a clean-up. Yeah, I'm surprised you haven't seen them yet either. It's just a matter of time. So how do you combat Desk Ewoks? You get yourself a AT-ST Desktop lamp, that's what.

This Steampunk AT-ST Lamp was made by Gozdom using wood, bronze and copper overlays and looks pretty awesome. It's made to resemble the AT-ST scout walker, but with a head that resembles the boiler of a steam locomotive.

Okay, so the Empire's machines didn't do so well against Ewoks and their primitive weapons on Endor, but at least you will have a fighting chance when the Desk Ewoks show up.

Ask The Californian: Is the Blaze stadium still coming? - Bakersfield Californian

Q: I remember reading in The Californian that the new ballpark was going to break ground in February. It is now April. What happened? Is the ballpark still happening?

-- Moe Adame

A: Owners of the Bakersfield Blaze baseball team offered assurances as recently as this past week that work on the project continues.

Owners Gene Voiland and fellow oilman Chad Hathaway unveiled plans Nov. 1 for a $20 million, 3,500-seat venue at the Bakersfield Commons mixed-used real estate development proposed at Coffee and Brimhall roads.

Just over a month later, they secured a conditional use permit for the stadium from the city's Board of Zoning Adjustment. Voiland said at the time that he hoped to break ground in February.

Project grading plans submitted to the city in January were sent back for corrections shortly afterward. The next step in the permitting process would be receiving the corrected plans, said Rhonda Smiley, assistant to the city manager.

But Bakersfield Building Director Phil Burns said, "We have not received any new plans since then."

Voiland said in an interview April 5 that he and Hathaway were still working on the project's financing, and that they were diligently "dotting the 'I's and crossing the 'T's." He declined to elaborate.

"There's always a point where we make, quote-unquote, the final decision," he said, "and we're not ready to say that."

Several elected and appointed city officials said they do not know the project's exact status -- but that it's not really any of their business. As Smiley put it, "We're not in partnership with them. This is a private venture."

Voiland had this to say in an email Friday:

"The Blaze ownership, many contractors, consultants and permitting authorities have been working hard over the past few months to put all the pieces in place to make the new ballpark a reality. We now have a nearly complete set of architectural drawings for a first class ballpark. We have moved forward with our construction planning and obtaining the necessary construction permits.

"As you can imagine, this is a very complex effort that requires many parts to come together before we are able to 'break ground.' But we are very close, and expect that we will be able to be more specific about our timeline as early as (this) week."

Q: Why aren't U-turns permissible at the intersection of southbound Calloway Drive and Rosedale Highway? There is plenty of room to make a U-turn and it is impossible to get to the CVS/pharmacy when driving south.

-- Katy Swanson

A: Ryan Starbuck, traffic engineer with the city's public works department, answered this one:

The city removed the sign several months ago. The sign had been installed by Caltrans before the development on the northeast corner to widen the road to its ultimate location, which now provides enough room for the U-turn movement.

Q: Can you disclose to your readers the authority under which police officers driving city of McFarland police cars are arresting drivers south of the city limits in the northbound lanes of Highway 99?

I understood that city police jurisdiction ends at the city limits (unless in hot pursuit). However, I have witnessed on several separate occasions McFarland city police cars sitting in the shade of the trees at the Whisler Road interchange, assumably running radar or laser, and on Sunday of this week, I saw a driver pulled over by a McFarland unit, fully 500 yards south of the city limits sign, in the northbound lane, meaning the officer had to make the arrest outside the city limits.

-- Gregg K. Knowles

A: McFarland Sgt. Scot Kimble responded:

Police officers from the McFarland Police Department and every police officer in the state of California has statewide jurisdiction to enforce violations of law. Jurisdictional boundaries are those boundaries that are governed by municipal employment.

Any police officer in the state of California can make a traffic stop in any jurisdiction to affect the safety of the public. As you are aware, Highway 99 splits the city of McFarland and is well within our jurisdiction. It is our determination to reduce, or minimize, safety issues on every road within our jurisdiction (including Highway 99).

We do not enforce California vehicle violations unless they are committed in our presence on Highway 99. The direct vehicle code enforcement is the mission of the California Highway Patrol. As in every other jurisdiction in the county of Kern and the state of California, traffic safety is a major issue. Just recently in the jurisdiction of McFarland, there was a major traffic collision on Highway 99, which had fatal consequences. It is the job of our police department to do whatever is necessary to minimize such traffic collisions on all roads within our city.

As an aggressive and viable police department in Kern County, we will continue to make our city safe as possible. In review of your question to The Californian, our department has not affected the arrest of anyone outside our city's jurisdiction while on Highway 99. We appreciate your concerns and welcome any inquiries into our department operations. Should you have any further questions, please contact the administration of the McFarland Police Department at 792-2121.

Ask The Californian appears on Mondays. Submit questions to asktbc@bakersfield.com or to The Bakersfield Californian, c/o Christine Bedell, P.O. Bin 440, Bakersfield, CA 93302.

15 Revelations From Morning TV Wars - Daily Beast

The New York Times might have trashed its own Brian Stelter's book on the morning TV wars, but from 'Operation Bambi' to Stephanopoulos's Italian bed, there are still plenty of revelations to be had.

Things are going to get awkward at the water cooler after The New York Times panned its own staff reporter Brian Stelter's book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, all about the early morning TV wars between NBC's Today show, ABC's Good Morning America, and CBS This Morning. Perhaps the criticism was warranted'Stelter's breezy account is indeed sprinkled with 'a little overblown prose, some of it just plain silly,' as former Dallas Morning News television critic Ed Bark wrote in the Times review. But the book does offer some intriguing revelations, especially in NBC's debacle over demoting Ann Curry as cohost of the Today show. From 'Operation Bambi' to George Stephanopoulos's Italian neoclassical bed, here are the 15 juiciest bits from the exposé.

(L-R) Ann Curry and Matt Lauer appear on NBC News' "Today" show. (Peter Kramer/NBC via Getty)

Ann Curry was born in Guam and went to the University of Oregon, where Animal House was filmed'Curry's husband, Brian Ross (not the ABC News reporter), can (barely) be seen in one of the movie's frat-party scenes.

Curry wanted Tom Brokaw's job on NBC Nightly News, but when Brian Williams got it, Curry called then-NBC News president Andrew Lack at home to tell him she was unhappy about it. A colleague of Curry's said, 'The dirty little secret about Ann is that she is so fucking ambitious.'

Curry then moved on to the Today show, where she was news anchor. Cohosts Matt Lauer, Katie Couric, news anchor Curry, and weatherman Al Roker were 'America's first family.' But producers said Couric thought Curry was fake, and the two had a tense rivalry. Curry jockeyed to fill in for Couric every time she was away.

When Couric let NBC know that she'd be leaving, president and CEO of NBC Universal Jeff Zucker courted The View's Meredith Vieira as the replacement. When Lauer invited Vieira to dinner at his Park Avenue apartment, she wore a white T-shirt, black jacket, and jeans, and worried about being underdressed. When she saw Lauer wearing jeans and a sweater, she thought, I love him already. When Curry was told she was passed over, she put an 'out' clause in her next contract that allowed her to leave the network immediately if she was passed over again.

'I Can't Believe I Am Sitting Next to This Woman'

When Matt Lauer was told Curry was to be his cohost, he said, 'OK, but'' He thought their on-air chemistry was lacking. On the first day that Curry took over, she blurted out on air, 'I knew I should have worn deodorant today, this is hard today!' Lauer groaned, 'Thanks for sharing that.' One day not long after, Lauer told a production assistant: 'I can't believe I am sitting next to this woman.' A staffer said, 'At some point, Matt just kind of gave up.'

'Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV' by Brian Stelter. 312 pp. Grand Central. $28.

Rumors began that Lauer was leaving, but he only had serious discussions with ABC. Lauer was the biggest star in morning television, reportedly earning $25 million a year, and was the show's most familiar face. So when his performance suffered due to the lack of chemistry with Curry, he threatened to leave. Today show executive producer Jim Bell needed to fix the problem, and to get rid of Curry as fast as possible. Bell called his campaign to get rid of Curry 'Operation Bambi,' and Stelter waxes poetic on the name, saying that it 'may have been far less important in the general sweep of history, but it was no less earnest an endeavor than the Nazis' Operation Sea Lion or America's Operation Desert Storm.'

Bell one day called staffers into his office to chuckle at a verbal gaffe that Curry made. And when one day Curry wore a bright-yellow dress, staffers in the control room Photoshopped a picture of Big Bird next to Curry that read, 'Who wore it best?' Tape reviews are part of the job for executive producers to iron out problems with the anchor, but 'one of her allies' said Curry was not getting feedback from Jim Bell. Curry said she felt tortured by Bell's campaign.

'While morning TV is created mostly for women, it is, even at this late date, quite obviously managed mostly by men'men who like to think in terms of war, sabotage, and, well, embarrassing James Bond-y names for stuff they do in the office.'

'Not to put too fine a point on it, when you're dealing with a lot of rich folks whose alarm clocks go off at three thirty in the morning day after day, some crazy shit is going to go down. For example, Operation Bambi.'

When Curry was finally canned, she gave a tearful farewell on the show'what NBC dreaded. The public blamed Lauer, the star the executives most needed to protect. Curry's fans exacted revenge, switching channels the next day as Savannah Guthrie took over Curry's role. They switched to ABC's Good Morning America.

Watch Ann Curry's emotional 'Today Show' goodbye.

Today had beat out ABC's Good Morning America in ratings every week for 852 weeks, a fabled streak stretching back to 1995. But shortly before Curry left GMA had ended that streak, and when Curry was ousted GMA grew even stronger. The Robin Roberts-George Stephanopoulos era began in 2009, and centered on fluff.

Stelter closely described Stephanopoulos's Upper East Side apartment and his early-morning routine. He says the host slept in a 'rather fabulous Italian neoclassical bed,' woke up at 2:35 a.m. every work day, and would meditate cross-legged for 10 minutes. Stephanopoulos reportedly makes more than five million dollars a year.

Thrown into the mix was MSNBC's Morning Joe, which made Lauer fume every time people talked about a guest they had seen on Morning Joe without realizing that the same guest had been on Today. Today show executive producer Jim Bell once told Morning Joe counterpart Chris Licht, "You're the most talked-about show that no one watches." Licht responded, "You're the most watched show that no one talks about."

CBS, long in third place in the morning wars, wanted to be like Morning Joe. It lured Licht to create the new CBS This Morning in 2012, and asked interviewer Charlie Rose to cohost. Rose was determined to keep his legendary nightly program as well as anchor the CBS show, and all his friends, including New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, thought he couldn't possibly do it. 'Do you think I can beat Matt Lauer?' he asked Stelter. Today, CBS's morning show remains third in ratings.

By January 2013, Lauer had lost his title as the most-liked man on morning TV. That title now belongs to Stephanopoulos.

ABC 'scrubbed a few curse words' but largely allowed every quote to be used. NBC kept every Jim Bell quote during Stelter's control room visits off the record, and even restricted descriptions of his body language. Lauer did not agree to be interviewed, and NBC is said to have prevented Curry from being interviewed after she was ousted.

Truth serum - The Age - The Age

Cold comfort ' winter can be harsh on your complexion. Photo: Grey Zisser/Snapper Media

With winter closing in, now is the time to re-evaluate your skincare routine to ensure your skin is getting the protection it needs in the cold months ahead; airconditioning, central heating, cold wind and hot showers can all wreak havoc on the skin's moisture levels. That's where adding a souped-up serum to your daily repertoire comes into the picture.

Unlike thick face creams, which tend to settle on the skin's top layer, the ingredients used in serums are more highly concentrated and boast smaller molecules that enable the product to sink into the skin more effectively. They're also designed to tackle one specific concern, such as wrinkles or dehydration.

Like any skincare product, it takes a month of using a serum before you will begin to notice results. For maximum absorption, apply a pea-sized amount of the product to damp skin directly after cleansing and use the palms of your hands to slowly press the product onto the skin, concentrating on the cheeks, jawline and forehead before layering your moisturiser over the top. And if you're using a hydrating serum, don't forget to treat your neck and chest area to the same treatment.

Hot tipRegular, gentle exfoliation not only helps to reveal the more youthful skin cells waiting in the ranks, it also helps the skincare that follows, such as your serum and face cream, to sink in more effectively.

ASK THE BEAUTY EDITOR '

How can I stretch an extra day out of a shampoo and blow-dry without my hair looking oily and flat?

Invest in dry shampoo: a super-fine powder that soaks up excess oil at the roots in between washes. Switching your part will confuse the roots and help you capitalise on the volume underneath. Start by spritzing roots with dry shampoo before using your hands to create an imperfect part on the opposite side. And use a thick-bristled brush to backcomb the crown and lengths to stop the ends from looking stringy.

Lighting The Lamp: Winding The Season Down - St. Louis Game Time

You might recognize the "Lighting the Lamp" feature from the Game Time paper. Rick Ackerman has been nice enough to send over his column for the website. "Lighting the Lamp" will be featured weekly every Thursday afternoon, as well as every home game day.

After tonight's tilt with the Phoenix Coyotes, the Blues only have five games left to play and there are only nine days left on the NHL schedule. Wow! The 2012-13 regular season surely went by quickly, didn't it? Yes, the playoffs start in less than two weeks on Tuesday, April 30, three days after the regular season ends. And it's looking pretty good for the boys in blue to qualify, despite continuing problems that also make it look pretty unlikely that they can capture the much desired number four seed and home ice advantage in the first round. Of course, be careful what you wish for as the Blues have a much better road record and might just be better off playing a majority of playoff games on the road.

The Blues' fate is in their own collective hands, however, and there is still plenty of time to pass Minnesota, San Jose and Los Angeles. With a game in hand on all three teams, St. Louis is only a point behind the Wild and three behind the Sharks and Kings.

Unfortunately for those desiring home ice advantage, Los Angeles and San Jose both figure to win at least three of their remaining five games, which means the Blues would have to earn at least nine points in six games, including tonight. To finish sixth (and most likely face Vancouver in the first round), the Blues will have to outpace Minnesota, which also figures to win at least three of their remaining five games (those against bottom-feeders Calgary, Edmonton and Colorado) and end up with at least 57 points.

In that scenario, the Blues need to win four in order to end up with 58 points.

Teams that could pass the Blues and even knock them out of the playoffs include Detroit, Columbus and Dallas. If Phoenix wins tonight's contest, they could be in the running, only trailing St. Louis by five points. The Coyotes have a tough five games remaining, though, playing at Chicago, Detroit, coming home to face San Jose, Colorado and then finishing at Anaheim. It's not likely they will win more than two of those games (or that the Blues will not win another game this shortened season), although stranger things have happened in past NHL races for playoff qualification. If the Blues win tonight, then it doesn't matter. And it's the same with Dallas. If the Blues defeat the Stars tomorrow night, Dallas would be at least five points behind with only four games left, at Los Angeles and San Jose, then finishing at home against Columbus and Detroit. It's unlikely they will win more than two of those games or get more than four points. On the other hand, if Dallas defeats Vancouver (at home tonight) and then the Blues tomorrow night, they are indeed capable of surpassing the Note in points. It's that close.

Of more concern are the Red Wings and Blue Jackets. Columbus is in the midst of a six game road trip that started quite well with two bonus-time victories in Minnesota and Colorado. After a tough game in Anaheim last night, they play in Los Angeles tonight, and then off to San Jose and Dallas. The Jackets end the season at home against Nashville, a team that has now lost seven games in a row and is out of contention, despite acclaimed goaltender Pekka Rinne, aka Blues-killer. Can they win more than two of those four remaining games? If they do and the Blues somehow cannot win at least two of six remaining, then we will all be surely singing the blues here in St. Louis. Detroit is more of a threat, with three of their remaining five games against teams lower in the standings than they are and with three at the friendly confines of Joe Louis Arena. They end the season at Dallas. Figure that the Red Wings can earn at least six more points, which means the Blues have to win at least half of their remaining games to stay ahead. That is certainly do-able, but by no means any kind of guarantee.

It all depends, of course, on the Blues suddenly impotent offense, including a pitiful power play. What happened? David Perron has not scored a goal since March 12 (16 games). Alex Pietrangelo, supposedly the Blues' best offensive defenseman, has not scored since March 19, a drought now lasting 18 games. Team scoring leader Chris Stewart has one goal in the last 12 games, the same as Alexander Steen. Patrick Berglund has one in the last 13 games. Captain David Backes has two goals in his last 22 games, the same as Andy McDonald in 16 games. Rookie sensation Vlad Tarasenko has cooled off, scoring only two goals (in the same game at Los Angeles) in the last 19 games. The Blues have scored two or fewer goals in nine of the last 12 games now. As January ended, the Blues had the top offense in the league, averaging just under four goals per game. They now rank 17th with 2.57 goals per game. And the power play is a mess. They have now gone 28 games without scoring more than one power play goal in any single game. At the end of January, the Blues had the number one power play in the league, operating at over 30% efficiency. They now rank 12th at 19.4%. Yikes!

Tonight would be a great night for the Blues to rediscover their offense and see the power play click more than once. In two previous meetings this season, the Blues have scored nine goals (and only allowed three against goaltender Jake Allen in both games, one a shutout). There is no reason they cannot continue that success tonight.

Reddit and Crowdsourcing: Valuable or Problematic? - TIME

In the mad scramble to figure out who was behind the Boston Marathon bombings, there's been a lot of praise and scorn heaped upon Reddit ' and crowdsourcing in general ' for its attempts to play detective.

Reddit is deserving of both. While the social news site did unearth some useful information, such as a photo of one of the suspects that originally appeared on Facebook, it alsonamed the wrong man as a suspect and later apologized.

This may seem like an incredibly wobbly stance to take (Reddit is good! It's also bad!) but the reality is that crowdsourcing is valuable for certain things, and problematic for others. As we follow along with major news events, readers and news organizations alike need to be mindful of what Reddit's strengths and weaknesses are so we can stay informed while steering clear of bad info.

Reddit Is Great at Gathering'

When thinking about Reddit's role in crisis situations, my mind jumped back to the theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., last year. As soon as the news broke, Redditors began compiling information in real time, and the result was a comprehensive timeline of what happened.

The information on that page outshined any website story or TV news broadcast you could find at the time. There was no filler, no noise, just hard data updated regularly. Want more? Refresh the page.

This is standard procedure for Reddit during huge, breaking news events. Here's a timeline for the Boston Marathon explosions, and here's one for the West, Texas fertilizer plant explosion.

Reddit isn't just good at compiling what's already known. It's also good at digging up new points of interest. After the Aurora shooting, one Redditor who was in the theater offered a first-hand account of the events. This thread led to other first-hand information, such as photos of the scene. Once the suspect was identified as James Holmes, Reddit uncovered informationfrom an adult dating sitethat the mainstream media missed.

Reddit's strengths are inherent to its nature. As a massive community on the hunt for interesting things, it can canvas the Internet in ways that a single news organization or reporter cannot.I wonder how many reporters watch those Reddit threads to see if they missed anything.

'But It's Not So Great at Figuring Things Out

The problem comes when a crowd of Internet users tries to draw conclusions (or, put another way, point fingers) based on the information it's come up with. See, for example, Thursday'sReddit post where a user wonders aloud whether a missing Brown University student is a suspect in the bombings. Another user attempted to answer: 'according to Boston police scanner (via twitter) ' the answer may be yes.'

Let's break down what happened: one Redditor tried to draw a line between a missing student and an unidentified bomber, seemingly without evidence. As this post gained traction, a second user insinuated that the student was a suspect, based on police scanner activity. Both users tried to draw conclusions based on tenuous information. Reddit then amplified that bogus conclusion, eager to trumpet its own detective work.

To be clear, I'm not trying to pin all the blame on Reddit for spreading false information. Major news organizations have also done their fair share of bad reporting, and deserve even harsher criticism for doing so. If anything, news organizations should be filtering out unverified information from sources like Reddit, not amplifying it.

But given Reddit's ability to provide breaking news faster, and more thoroughly, than mainstream outlets, we need to be savvy about the information it provides. There's a huge difference between sober fact-finding, which Reddit is extremely good at, and finger-pointing, which it is not. The site is still invaluable during major news events, but readers and the press should be deeply skeptical of crowdsourcing's ability to actually solve crimes.
